Leslie R. Black
Leslie Black lives in Broom in Rotherham and has been a semi-professional artist for the past 47 years, combining his passion for painting with a career in the steel industry. His picture in the exhibition was painted from his memories working in the melting shop at Steel, Peech and Tozer in Templeborough. He says: "I wanted to capture the heat, power and drama of the place." After starting work as a labourer, Leslie moved up to become a training officer and manager within the steel industry. He went on to have considerable success as an artist, and his paintings have been included in a series of major London exhibitions. Now aged 79, he still paints, exhibits his work and gives demonstrations. Leslie works in watercolour and gouache, painting local landscapes, coastal views, industrial scenes and pictures which include humour and social comment.
