Chris Bird has lived all of his life in the Rotherham area, and has worked as a commercial artist for the past 30 years. Based at the Old Building Yard in Wentworth, he has built up a strong following with art lovers and collectors alike. A self-taught representational artist, he works in traditional materials such as oil, watercolour, pen and ink, pencil and charcoal. Chris is originally from Dalton and now lives in Greasbrough, an area which is the subject of several of his oil paintings. He loves to paint almost anything from portraits to landscapes, townscapes, seascapes, woodlands, meadows, machinery and animals, with a particular interest in countryside scenes. His aim is to paint atmosphere; to capture the warmth of a summer's breeze, the buzzing of bees in a meadow, the lapping of water on a canal bank, the rustle of leaves in the autumn woodland, the sound of the rain on a tin roof or crunch of frozen snow underfoot. Chris said: "My aim in painting is not only to paint the scene before me but to try and capture the atmosphere, to make the viewer aware of not just the sights but also of the sounds and feeling embodied in the painting."
