The Art and Where to Find It
Sun Rising through Vapour
Artist: J. M. W. Turner
Location: Red Lion Yard. The original is on display at The National Gallery, London.
An early seascape from one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting. The oil on canvas is one of a succession of marine pictures Turner executed as a young man up to about 1810 that helped to build his reputation. It doesn't appear to show a particular location but shows fishermen cleaning and selling fish. Turner bequeathed much of his work to the nation with much of it on display at The National Gallery in London. In Turner's will he asked for this and his Dido building Carthage to be hung between Claude's Seaport with the Embarkation of the Queen of Sheba and The Mill. J. M. W.
