The Art and Where to Find It

A Woman and Five Children

Artist: The Le Nain Brothers

Year: 1642

Location: Former Lloyd's bank, Corporation Street. The original is on display at The National Gallery, London.

An oil portrait painted on copper also known as A Family Group and The Tasting. There is no way of knowing which of the three Le Nain brothers, Antoine, Louis or Matthieu, produced this piece due to the remarkable similarity of their styles and the fact that they all signed their paintings only with their surname. This could be the work of Antoine who is often credited with a group of small-scale and richly coloured family genre scenes. Strips of wood extend the support beyond the copper on all sides.
